Drift Club 16 can be seen as an extension of Drift Club 15's exploration of Amsterdam Noord’s recent post-industrial past and present in Buiksloterham, Asterdorp, around Paperverweg, and NDSM. This time we walked through some of the eastern portion of Noord that are in the midst of similar transformation. It’s an area that is almost a mirror image of the western portion of Noord, in that the shadow of the former Amsterdam Dry Dock Company, and other large manufacturers looms large.
We walked through Vogelbuurt, IJ-Plein, and Hamerkwartier in particular, where there have been competing plans for redevelopment over the last several years. These plans have tried to balance the needs of the existing neighborhoods, the environmental issues caused by industrial manufacturing, and the needs of an expanding city population.
Some redevelopment has taken place already in Hamerkwartier, while some of the larger and more ambitious plans are currently stuck in legal challenges. We walked through these neighborhoods as they are now, which contains some of the most fascinating contrasts in all of Amsterdam.
The starting point was Pont Neuf Buiksloterweg, and the walk lasted about 90 minutes.
